The Junior, and the L6 Science Club

Junior Science Club

In the Junior Science Club year 8 - 10 pupils are given the opportunity to explore science under the guidance of enthusiastic year 13 science students.

Supervised by a science teacher, groups of these senior pupils plan and present a programme of activities for each after school session.  These can be as varied as simple chemistry experiments that can be performed safely at home to DNA extraction or the dissection of rats.  The aims are to inspire everyone involved to engage with science and to develop some of the skills that are essential for success beyond school.

L6 Science Club

The Cambridge Chemistry Challenge for Lower Sixth students is an annual competition held in June, after pupils complete their AS examinations.  Set by an experienced team of teachers and university chemists, it is designed to be accessible to Year 13 students but will take them significantly beyond the syllabus and encourage them to think about science in the way they would at university.   In order to help pupils prepare over 100 challenges are available on the website with the aim of stretching and motivating students interested in chemistry.

A group of enthusiastic students from year 13 meet twice a month to solve these challenges which are in the form of cryptic puzzles.  Students also compete against each other to solve one puzzle from the C3L6 archives which is relevant to their current AS studies.  The names of those pupils who solve the puzzle first are listed on the honours board below.
