NI Blackthorns V Irish Guards Fixture Report

The fixture between the NI Blackthorns and the Irish Guards, held on 18 April 2026 at Regent House Grammar School in Newtownards, marked a significant milestone in the development of military rugby within Northern Ireland and the development of the NI Blackthorns.

The fixture was in honour of Lieutenant Colonel Robert Blair Mayne DSO, Regent’s most distinguished alumnus and talismanic son of Newtownards. The fixture commenced with an artillery display by 206 (Ulster) Battery, 105 Royal Artillery, setting a solemn and respectful tone. The teams entered the pitch to the stirring accompaniment of the 502 (Ulster) Squadron Pipes and Drums, performing the Pikeman’s March and the Battle of Waterloo, symbolically linking the themes of service, Ulster heritage, and military tradition. These elements, followed swiftly by the brutal encounter of regimental rugby, set a fitting tone to honour the great man.

The match itself was fiercely contested, characterised by robust tackling and high-intensity play, hallmarks of regimental rugby. The NI Blackthorns led for the majority of the game; however, the Irish Guards’ blend of youth and experience prevailed with a decisive try in the 80th minute, concluding the fixture with a 22-19 victory in their favour. In a display of mutual respect and camaraderie, both teams formed a circle to perform a powerful rendition of Eda Sa Qaqa (‘‘We have Overcome’’), the anthem of the Blackthorns. Combined with the earlier musical pieces, this moment elegantly encapsulated the shared values of service, heritage, and resilience while paying a respectful nod to the influences of Ulster and, slightly further east, Fiji. The fixture’s success is exemplified by the feedback of some of its youngest spectators, with two of our pupils acting as ball boys (Joseph Simpson and Stan Thompson), stating they has never seen such a passionate and ferocious display of rugby.

The event was graciously concluded with hospitality provided by Ards RFC, who, despite concurrently hosting the Malone Tornadoes mixed-ability team, ensured refreshments were available for all military participants.

This fixture was a resounding success, exemplifying the spirit of military sport and community engagement. It was made possible through the generous support of numerous organisations and individuals, and it stands as a testament to the unifying power of sport within the military community.
