Irish Schools’ Write Up 2025

Twenty one pupils travelled to Tullamore, County Offaly on Friday 30th May to compete at the Irish Schools’ Championships, which is the pinnacle of Schools’ athletics.

The Junior Girls’ team had 5 members competing, led by Sara Devany who is the first Regent athlete ever in history to win 3 gold medals at this Championship.  She won the Triple Jump on Friday night with a new personal best performance of 10m 47 to claim the title.  Brooke Melville was also competing in the triple jump in her first Irish Championship and finished a close 4th place with a best jump of 9m 86.  Brooke has demonstrated excellent potential in this event. Sara was back in action on the track on Saturday and impressed in the 75m Hurdles, it was a very exciting race that resulted in a dead heat! Both girls were awarded the gold medal, in a new Championship Record of 11.18.  Sara and Rachel (the High Cross College pupil) were awarded the prestigious Sean Noughton Cup for best hurdle performance of the championships.  Katie Johnston had a busy day in the sprints, finishing 5th in the 100m in 13.21 and a very close 4th in the 200m in a new personal best of 26.39. Katie has made excellent progress this season and should be commended. Lara Greene finished 9th in the high jump with a best jump of 1.40. The Junior Girls secured the gold medal in a new school record of 50.83 in the 4x100m. This was an excellent performance from Erin Coard, Lara Greene, Katie Johnston and Sara Devany. 

The Inter Girls’ team was led by Gabby Scates who competed in the 300m Hurdles, finishing 5th in a time of 46.54. Gabby also competed in the 80m Hurdles and achieved an excellent third place in a time of 12.07. Isla Henry was in action in the 100m, finishing in a close 4th place in a time of 12.68. The Inter Girls relay team finished a strong 2nd in the 4x100m in a time of 50.50. A huge well done to Daisy Forbes, Gabby Scates, Eva Patton and Isla Henry.

Lucy Kay also competed in her first Irish Schools’ Championships in the Senior girls’ steeplechase and finished 8th in a time of 6.33.15. Clara McKay was sixth in the Triple Jump and 7th in the 100m Hurdles in a new personal best of 16m 29.

Stephen Kelly competed in the 400m Hurdles finishing in 5th place in a time of 60.15.  Finn McClean was also 5th in the 100m Hurdles in a time of 14.51. Harrison Jamison continues to impress in the 400m, with another strong performance, finishing 2nd in a time of 50.40. The boys were joined by Ewan Donald in the 4x100m to storm to victory in an outstanding time of 43.41, which is a new school record.

The Senior boys 4x100m relay team; Kris Burgess, Euan Monro, Jack Bright and Harry Jackson finished 7th in a time of 46.18.
